Fire starting equipment
Greetings! Here is some sound advice to all those camping light, or backpacking over a weekend. If you worry about using lighters, or lighter fluid for starting a fire, and would rather go for a more natural approach, matches are a wonderful choice... but 'un-tweaked', they can be flimsy or weakened, or worse. What is one to do? Well, while cardboard matches will do just fine for the hardcore backpacker, they can still become ruined easily with any mishap/contact with water. Here's some good ways to beef-up your matches. First of all, you might want to opt for wooden matches. The best kind out there are the 'strike anywhere' type, such as the famous "Ohio Blue-Tips". Next, light a candle and when a good amount of melted wax has collected at the top, stick the match heads into this, covering the match head completely, or ideally, the entire match stick should have a nice thin coat of this melted wax. This does two things; it completely seals the match stick, giving it water resistance, and it also provides extra fuel for flame. If you do coat the entire match stick however, be sure to be careful when you strike it, as the flame will climb up the stick quickly. If you are able to apply your match to your tinder in a quick fashion, you should be fine - but if you need to be holding the match a while, scrape off the excess wax from the stick (for example, with your thumbnail). When your matches are scarce, you could (very carefully) split them in half lengthwise (from the "foot end") with a pocket knife. With skill, this can also be pretty easy to do with your finger/thumb nails with the cardboard variety match stick. |
